Synopsis
Brass Eye (1997) is the British satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Chris Morris plays a self-serious investigative anchor and uses fake news reports to expose how television manufactures panic. Each episode picks a hot-button topic — drugs, sex, crime, animals — and pushes it past breaking point.
The whole engine of the show is the hoax. Morris lures real celebrities and politicians into the studio and gets them to condemn invented dangers, including a made-up drug, all on camera and dead earnest. None of the guests realise they are the punchline. Michael Cumming directed it for Channel 4, with Mark Heap, Kevin Eldon and Gina McKee filling out the cast.
Few things on British TV have ever been this cold or this precise about media hypocrisy. A 2001 special on paedophilia caused such an uproar that it landed on front pages for days. If you like dry, merciless comedy with no safety net, this one rewards you. Stream Brass Eye (1997) online on iFILM.
