Synopsis
A Matador's Mistress (2008), released elsewhere as Manolete, is a biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Written and directed by Menno Meyjes, it follows Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez — the bullfighter the whole of 1940s Spain adored as the finest of his era.
In the ring he moved with an icy calm, as if death simply did not apply to him. Off it, he lost himself entirely to Lupe Sino, an actress with left-wing politics and a reputation loud enough to scandalize a conservative nation. Their affair drew fire from every direction: a disapproving public, a jealous mother, and a Francoist press eager to tear the couple apart. Adrien Brody plays the matador as a withdrawn, burnt-out idol; Penélope Cruz is the fire he can't resist and the trouble he can't survive.
The production sat shelved for years amid financial disputes and finally arrived in a trimmed-down cut, which shows in its choppy rhythm. Still, it lands when it digs into the cost of fame and the way love strips bare a man used to gambling his life for a crowd.
