Synopsis
The Sweet East (2023) is a satirical tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the directing debut of cinematographer Sean Price Williams — a road odyssey down the Eastern seaboard where you never quite know what the next turn will bring.
Lillian, a high-school senior from South Carolina, joins her class on a trip to Washington, D.C., and then peels away from the group. From there she drifts through one American subculture after another: punk squatters, a charming intellectual neo-Nazi, scheming indie filmmakers, radicals and preachers. Almost nothing fazes her, and she lingers nowhere, watching the country pass by like a waking dream. Talia Ryder leads the cast, with Simon Rex, Ayo Edebiri and Jacob Elordi filling out the ride.
Film critic Nick Pinkerton wrote the screenplay, and the whole thing was shot on 16mm, giving it the feel of a feverish fable about the ideologies of present-day America. The humor bites and the tone keeps slipping away — clearly festival fare, and not for everyone. It's a strong pick if you hunt for offbeat independent cinema and don't mind being thrown off balance.
