La Promesse

When a Burkinabe worker named Amidou falls from scaffolding during a surprise labour inspection, Roger's instinct is damage control — bury the man, pay off the wife, make everything disappear. But Igor crouched beside the dying man and made him a promise. That word now sits between the boy and his father like a stone neither can move.

This was the Dardenne brothers' second feature, shot handheld on the back streets of Liège before "Rosetta" brought them the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
