About

Synopsis

Lorna's Silence (Le Silence de Lorna, 2008) is a crime drama from the Dardenne brothers, available to watch online on iFILM. Lorna, a young Albanian woman, has married a heroin addict named Claudy purely to secure Belgian citizenship.

The arrangement is coldly worked out: once the papers come through, Claudy is supposed to die of a convenient overdose, freeing Lorna to marry a Russian for cash and open the café she dreams of with her real partner. Then Claudy decides to get clean and clings to her as his one lifeline — and something in Lorna refuses to go along. Stay silent and she lets him be killed; speak up and she detonates the whole scheme, turning on the criminal who built it.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne shoot the way they always do: handheld camera, not a note of score, long unbroken takes that lean entirely on the performers. Arta Dobroshi carries the lead, with Jérémie Renier as Claudy. The screenplay took the writing prize at the 2008 Cannes festival. Quiet, severe filmmaking that explains nothing — for viewers who want European auteur realism over spectacle. Stream Lorna's Silence (2008) online on iFILM.
