Synopsis
The Catholic School (La scuola cattolica, 2021) is Stefano Mordini's Italian drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It traces a 1975 crime back to the world that produced it: a wealthy Rome neighborhood and the all-boys Catholic academy at its center.
Three privileged young men, recent students of the strict San Leone Magno school, commit an atrocity that the press would name the Circeo massacre. Rather than dwell on the act, the film studies the soil it grew in — pious appearances, family money, a culture of male entitlement, and the cracking certainties of church and household in 1970s Italy. The cast brings together Benedetta Porcaroli, Valeria Golino, Riccardo Scamarcio and Jasmine Trinca.
It adapts Edoardo Albinati's novel of the same name, winner of the Strega Prize, Italy's top literary honor. This is deliberately hard viewing: it refuses catharsis and instead frames wealth and respectability as conditions that let cruelty fester. If you sit with bleak true-crime and films like Elephant, it will land. Stream The Catholic School (2021) online on iFILM.
