About

Synopsis

Pelle the Conqueror (Pelle Erobreren, 1987) is a Danish-Swedish drama by Bille August, free to watch online on iFILM. A boat of Swedish emigrants reaches the Danish island of Bornholm in the late 1800s. Among them are an aging widower, Lasse, and his young son Pelle.

The two sign on as farmhands at a sprawling estate, hoping to save enough to sail for America. The labor is brutal, the locals treat them as outsiders, and Lasse's dream thins with every passing winter. Pelle absorbs the cruelty and the cold, then slowly hardens into something his broken father never managed to be. Max von Sydow gives Lasse a stooped, exhausted dignity that's hard to look away from.

August adapted the story from Martin Andersen Nexø's novel about poverty and stubborn hope. The film took the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, while von Sydow landed a rare nomination for a non-English leading role. This is patient, unhurried filmmaking for viewers who want a character built over hours rather than lines of dialogue. Stream Pelle the Conqueror (1987) online on iFILM.
