Synopsis
Memories of Underdevelopment (Memorias del subdesarrollo, 1968) is Tomás Gutiérrez Alea's Cuban drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Havana, just after the revolution. Sergio — a well-off bourgeois and would-be writer — sees his wife, parents and friends off to Miami at the airport. Then he stays. Alone, in a country that is no longer his.
What follows is the new Cuba seen through his eyes: idle, ironic, detached, a man who trusts neither the revolution nor the exiles fleeing it. He drifts through the city, takes up with a young woman named Elena and tries to reshape her into his ex-wife. The more he watches from the sidelines, the clearer it becomes that he is stuck between a past that's gone and a future he can't enter.
Alea splices fiction with real footage of the Bay of Pigs and the Missile Crisis, turning one man's drift into the portrait of an era. It's widely ranked among the finest Cuban films ever made and a cornerstone of Latin American cinema. Sharp, bitter and intimate. Stream Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) online on iFILM.
