It opens close to home: a hit-and-run leaves Leo's wife and daughter broken, and he travels back to his native Sheffield, where the line between justice and revenge nearly vanishes. From there the forensic team moves through a drive-by shooting outside a London nightclub, with one man playing two factions against each other, then into a string of academic murders that seem to have no motive at all. Nikki has to face a killer who acts purely for pleasure. The closing pair pulls the team into a mental-health care system, where a death that looks like suicide refuses to stay that way.
