Synopsis
The People Upstairs (Sentimental, 2020) is Cesc Gay's chamber comedy from Spain, and you can watch online on iFILM. Julio and Ana have been a couple for fifteen years, long enough that affection has curdled into a steady exchange of jabs. Tonight Ana has invited the neighbors from the floor above — the same pair whose loud nights keep the building awake.
Salva and Laura are younger, looser, and they didn't come up just for wine. They arrive with a proposition that tips the whole evening somewhere Julio never agreed to go. The film stays inside one apartment, more or less in real time: four people, a sofa, a string of awkward silences, and a conversation that digs far deeper than any of them planned. Javier Cámara packs an entire marriage into one sullen, glaring stretch of not-talking.
Gay adapts his own stage play, and the single setting isn't a limitation but the trap itself — the pressure builds precisely because nobody can walk out of the room. Eighty lean minutes pitched in that Spanish key where the funny and the painful sit right on top of each other. A good fit if you like talky, grown-up films about long relationships with no varnish.
