Synopsis
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978) is the Shaw Brothers kung fu landmark you can watch online on iFILM. When the Manchu Qing authorities crush a rebellion in Canton and wipe out his family, young San Te flees into the mountains to the Shaolin Temple. He arrives carrying one purpose: learn to fight, then take his revenge.
Inside the temple wait thirty-five chambers, each one breaking the body and the ego a different way. Balancing across logs above water. Ringing a heavy gong with bound arms. Hauling buckets up endless stairs. Gordon Liu plays San Te as a stubborn pupil who claws through every trial and finally invents a thirty-sixth chamber, one that opens the monks' guarded skills to ordinary people. Only then does he come down the mountain.
Director Lau Kar-leung was a real Hung Gar master, and the training sequences carry a precision the genre had rarely seen before him. The movie set the template for nearly every martial-arts apprenticeship story that followed, and it still echoes through cinema and hip-hop decades later. A perfect starting point for anyone curious where kung fu film really took shape. Stream The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978) online on iFILM.
