A-To, played by Gordon Liu, enters an arranged marriage with a Japanese woman named Kudo. The wedding goes fine. The marriage does not — she trains in Japanese martial arts every day, he considers Chinese kung fu superior, and a quarrel that starts as domestic friction escalates into an international incident. Kudo returns to Japan. Seven masters follow in her name: one for karate, one for judo, one for ninjitsu, one for samurai swordsmanship, each arriving to settle whose tradition is worth more.

What Lau Kar-leung built here is unusual: a kung fu film that treats the rival school as equally legitimate. The seven duels are almost forensic — each isolates a different discipline, lets it breathe on its own terms, then shows where it meets Chinese kung fu. No villain. No cheap outcome.
