Dana's mother was the only survivor of a massacre thirty years back. Dana knows the story only through inherited nightmares. When the group's car breaks down in that exact town, the Driller Killer turns out to be very much still active. Esterhazy builds in genre self-awareness without draining the horror out of it — the film earns its comedy through character, not winking. Hannah Gonera holds the centre well.
