Synopsis
A Gang Story (Les Lyonnais, 2011) is a French crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Olivier Marchal and starring Gérard Lanvin and Tchéky Karyo. It traces the rise and fall of the Lyonnais Gang — the armed robbery crew that terrorised French banks in the early seventies and became the most notorious of their era. Lanvin plays Momon, a man raised in poverty in a Roma camp who graduated from stealing cherries with his best friend to pulling off jobs that put them both in prison.
The film cuts between two timelines. In the seventies: the crew at full tilt, fuelled by loyalty and recklessness. In the present: Momon pushing sixty, settled, tending to his family, the past something he has chosen to leave alone. Then Serge — Karyo, refusing to disown a single day of it — walks back in. Marchal spent years as a detective before turning filmmaker, and it shows. There is no glamour in the violence here, and the bonds between these men are portrayed without nostalgia: earned through shared time, tested by every choice that followed.
