Synopsis
The Man Without a Past (Mies vailla menneisyyttä, 2002) is a Finnish drama by Aki Kaurismäki you can watch online on iFILM. A nameless man arrives in Helsinki and is beaten senseless on the platform before he even leaves the station. Declared dead in hospital, he wakes up with nothing — no name, no memory, no record of ever existing.
Markku Peltola plays the man with the quiet stubbornness of someone who has no choice but to start over. He sets up home in a shipping container on the city's edge, among dock workers and the otherwise forgotten. Kati Outinen brings the same measured, unhurried precision to Irma, the Salvation Army volunteer who becomes the one fixed point in his new life. A government repossession wipes out even his modest footing — yet being wiped clean of a past turns out to carry an unexpected freedom.
Kaurismäki tells the whole thing with barely a raised voice: long silences, sparse dialogue, workers' music on a battered jukebox. The film took the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2002 and picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It is the rare kind of movie that says more about human dignity by leaving out more than it puts in. Stream The Man Without a Past in full on iFILM.
