Synopsis
La Vie de Bohème (1992) is Aki Kaurismäki's black-and-white tragicomedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. Paris, three broke artists, and the Finnish director's bone-dry deadpan throughout.
Rodolfo is an Albanian painter with no visa, Marcel a playwright nobody will publish, and Schaunard a composer churning out unlistenable noise. They meet over cheap wine in cheaper cafés, scrape rent that never quite gets paid, and cling to an unshakable belief in their own genius. Money comes and goes, love arrives and breaks their hearts, and the three keep propping each other up because there's nothing else to lean on. Watch for cameos from Jean-Pierre Léaud and directors Louis Malle and Samuel Fuller.
It's drawn from Henri Murger's Scènes de la vie de bohème, the same book behind Puccini's opera, but Kaurismäki strips away every drop of romantic gloss — his bohemians are funny, proud and quietly lonely. A perfect doorway into European art-house cinema. Stream La Vie de Bohème (1992) online on iFILM.
