Synopsis
The Match Factory Girl (Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö, 1990) is available to watch online on iFILM — the third film in Aki Kaurismäki's Finnish Proletariat Trilogy, running a spare 69 minutes with not a scene to spare. Iris works a conveyor belt at a match plant, hands her wages to her mother and stepfather, and spends her weekends standing unnoticed at the edge of a dancehall.
One week she blows her savings on a pink dress. What follows is a brief encounter, a discarded letter, and a chain of small cruelties that Kaurismäki records without any melodrama — he simply watches. When Iris stops absorbing the humiliation, she is just as quiet about it as she was about everything else. Kati Outinen carries the whole film on a face that barely moves and yet misses nothing.
