Synopsis
Ariel (1988) is the second film in Aki Kaurismäki's Working Class trilogy — watch it online on iFILM. A mine in Lapland shuts down. Taisto Kasurinen pockets his severance, inherits his father's convertible, and heads south to Helsinki after the old man takes his own life in a roadside diner bathroom.
The city greets him with a mugging, a flophouse bunk and a pre-trial cell in roughly that order. He also meets Irmeli, a parking warden and single mother who has no illusions about how Helsinki works. Turo Pajala plays Taisto as a man who absorbs disaster without commentary, which in Kaurismäki's hands reads as both comedy and quiet devastation. Matti Pellonpää and Susanna Haavisto fill out the small cast that carries this 73-minute film.
Kaurismäki trades melodrama for deadpan restraint: the moments that should land as tragedy play dry, and the romantic ones carry unexpected weight because of it. For anyone curious where his signature style fully clicked into place, this is the film. Stream Ariel (1988) online on iFILM.
