Detour

His mother is in a coma after a car accident. One night, drunk and furious, he meets a small-time criminal named Johnny and agrees to pay him to kill his stepfather.

The morning after, the film splits in two. In one version, Harper never met Johnny; in the other, he is already locked in a car with Johnny and a woman named Pearl, riding toward something he cannot take back. Smith runs both timelines simultaneously, leaving the audience to figure out which path is real — and whether the distinction matters.

Smith, who previously directed Triangle and Creep, builds Detour around classic noir mechanics: a bad decision, a femme fatale, a patsy who thinks he is in control.
