Synopsis
Christmas in August (1998) is a Korean melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. Hur Jin-ho's directing debut follows Jung-won, a photographer in his early thirties who runs a small studio in a quiet Seoul neighborhood. He is terminally ill, and he keeps that fact to himself.
The summer outside is sweltering, but inside Jung-won is already living in winter. He develops other people's pictures, looks after his elderly father, takes portraits for funeral altars, and treats each ordinary day as something to be kept. Then Darim, a young traffic officer, starts dropping by to print parking-violation photos. A careful, unspoken romance grows between them. She has no idea he is dying, which makes every gentle exchange ache more than it lets on.
The film's power is in its restraint — almost no tears, no swelling music, no big declarations, just glances and silences carrying the weight. Han Suk-kyu and Shim Eun-ha underplay everything, and the result became a touchstone of Korean cinema about love and mortality. Slow, tender, and clear-eyed, it's for viewers who want feeling without melodrama's noise. Stream Christmas in August (1998) online on iFILM.
