Synopsis
Last Night (1998) is Don McKellar's end-of-the-world tragicomedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. At midnight the world ends — the film never says how — leaving everyone in Toronto with exactly six hours to fill.
The city winds down in different ways. Some barricade themselves indoors, some smash up the streets, some pray. Patrick wants to face the end alone, but his family drags him to one last festive dinner while his best friend Craig works methodically through a checklist of sexual fantasies. A stranger named Sandra, played by Sandra Oh, is stuck across town and desperate to reach her husband so they can go together. Meanwhile a gas-company executive — played by director David Cronenberg — calmly phones each customer to promise the heat will stay on until the very last minute.
McKellar stages an apocalypse with no special effects: no meteors, no screaming crowds, just people and the choices they make with the clock running out. The film took the youth jury prize at Cannes and stands apart from disaster movies through its quiet, almost ordinary tone. Perfect if you're tired of Hollywood catastrophe and want something human instead. Stream Last Night (1998) online on iFILM.
