Synopsis
The Day After (그 후, 2017) is a Korean drama from Hong Sang-soo, available to watch online on iFILM. Shot in stark black and white, it rests on four faces and a handful of rooms. On her very first morning at a small publishing house, Areum takes the seat of a woman the boss has just stopped seeing.
That same day his wife discovers a love letter, storms in, and accuses Areum — who arrived yesterday and understands nothing. From there the film unfolds the way Hong's films do: long meals, glasses of soju, looping confessions, and a different version of the truth in every mouth. Kwon Hae-hyo plays the publisher who talks grandly about love and flinches from it; Kim Min-hee plays the newcomer pulled into a mess that was never hers.
Working with almost no budget and barely a script, Hong films in unbroken takes punctuated by his trademark abrupt zooms, mining ordinary awkwardness for something painfully honest about self-deception. The film competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. It's for viewers who like quiet, talky cinema that refuses to hurry. Stream The Day After (2017) online on iFILM.
