Synopsis
Flowers of Shanghai (海上花, 1998) is Hou Hsiao-hsien's hypnotic period drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. The setting is 1880s Shanghai, the British concession, four lavish "flower houses" where the city's male elite spend their nights with courtesans.
The camera almost never leaves these lamp-lit rooms of dark lacquered panels. The men play drinking games, smoke opium and linger over wine, while quiet dramas of money and dependence unfold between them. Melancholy Wang cannot decide whether to stay with Crimson or leave her for young Jasmine. Emerald saves to buy back her own freedom. Pearl grooms the willful Jade, who clings to a young master's promises. Tony Leung plays much of it in silence, working through pauses rather than words.
Hou shoots in long, unbroken takes lit by oil flame, so each scene breathes as a single held moment and time seems to dissolve in the haze. The film competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1998 and stands among the high points of Asian art cinema. This is slow, immersive viewing for anyone willing to watch flowers wilt instead of waiting for plot turns. Stream Flowers of Shanghai (1998) online on iFILM.
