Japan Sinks: 2020 (Season 1)
Synopsis
Japan Sinks: 2020 (日本沈没2020) — watch online on iFILM this anime series produced by Science SARU for Netflix. The story kicks off in the days after the Tokyo Olympics: a rapid sequence of catastrophic earthquakes signals that the tectonic plates beneath the Japanese archipelago are shifting, and scientists conclude the islands will eventually submerge.
The Mutou family — mother, father, teenage son Go, and younger daughter Ayako — tries to escape across a country that is literally falling apart beneath them. Director Masaaki Yuasa (Devilman Crybaby) refuses to soften the survival arc: deaths hit without warning, choices carry permanent consequences, and the series cuts between intimate family grief and the broader collapse of infrastructure and society.
Ten episodes, released in 2020. It draws from Sakyo Komatsu's influential 1973 disaster novel — the same source as the 2006 live-action film — but Yuasa remakes it into something more personal and more unsparing. Stream Japan Sinks: 2020 online on iFILM.
