Synopsis

Saturday Night Live (1975), Season 11 — 18 episodes of NBC sketch comedy to watch online on iFILM. The 1985–86 run is best remembered for one homecoming: creator Lorne Michaels back behind the producer's desk.

Ebersol had left after NBC refused to shift the show onto tape, and the network nearly pulled the plug before programming chief Brandon Tartikoff coaxed Michaels back. He rebuilt almost from scratch. Dennis Miller took over Weekend Update, Jon Lovitz introduced Master Thespian and his pathological liar, and a raw crop of Robert Downey Jr., Randy Quaid and Anthony Michael Hall filled out the bench. Madonna opened the season as host.

Original writers Al Franken and Tom Davis came back as producers, and critics framed the whole thing as a return to the roots. The season runs uneven — a cast still finding its feet — yet it plants the seeds of the late-eighties characters. Hosts spanned Chevy Chase and Tom Hanks through Oprah Winfrey and Jay Leno.
