Synopsis

Saturday Night Live (1975), Season 5 is the NBC sketch-comedy show you can watch online on iFILM — 20 episodes that close out the original cast's run across the 1979–1980 season.

Belushi and Aykroyd had walked. Most fans figured that was the end. Instead Lorne Michaels kept the lights on by bumping his writers up to performers, while Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin and Garrett Morris carried the load and Harry Shearer joined as a new face. Steve Martin both opened and closed the year; in between, hosts ranged from Buck Henry and Kirk Douglas to Burt Reynolds and Rodney Dangerfield, with music from Blondie, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The B-52's and the Grateful Dead.

You still get Weekend Update, Mr. Bill and Father Guido Sarducci in their first incarnation. This is where an era ends: Michaels and nearly the whole troupe leave after these episodes, which makes Season 5 the cleanest place to see what early SNL actually was. Stream Saturday Night Live Season 5 online on iFILM.

The skits for this episode are as follows: Rosalyn Carter talks about sections of the 1980 census intended for illegal aliens, including questions about how they got into the US, where they would hide if the INS came to their homes, and how much they would be willing to do housework for. During his opening monologue, Strother Martin reveals that he was asked to host the show because Lorne Michaels mistook him for Tennessee Williams, and so far he's been keeping up the act. At Camp Beau Soleil, the campers are forced to learn French by the brutal camp counselor, Le Capitain, but a camper named Luke is determined to escape. Additional skits include a variety show will, the Conductor's Club, Any Town, and Food. The Specials perform "Gangsters" and "Too Much, Too Young".
