Synopsis
Carry On Cleo (1964) is a British comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Gerald Thomas. The tenth Carry On romp gleefully spoofs the lavish Hollywood Cleopatra that had just cost a fortune to make.
Two ancient Britons get hauled off to Rome as slaves. Bumbling inventor Hengist Pod accidentally flattens a pack of assassins and, mistaken for a great warrior, ends up guarding Julius Caesar himself. Meanwhile Mark Antony is besotted with Cleopatra, and only Caesar stands between him and her. Sidney James, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor and Joan Sims throw themselves at the togas and bad puns with full music-hall cheek.
The crew shot the whole farce on sets left standing from the ruinously expensive 1963 Cleopatra, buying an epic look for next to nothing. It also gave us Caesar's immortal cry, "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" — often voted one of the best gags in British film. Perfect for anyone who likes their comedy daft and unpretentious. Stream Carry On Cleo (1964) online on iFILM.
