Synopsis
Cheyenne Autumn (1964) is John Ford's last Western, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Starving on a bleak Oklahoma reservation, the Northern Cheyenne set out on foot for their old homeland in Wyoming — roughly fifteen hundred miles north.
Their pleas for food and shelter go unanswered in Washington, so two chiefs decide to lead the exhausted tribe home themselves. The army sends a reluctant cavalry officer, Captain Thomas Archer (Richard Widmark), to haul them back — a man carrying out an order he despises. Back east, newspapers spin the march into another "Indian uprising."
Ford meant the picture as an apology, made after decades in which his own films had used Native characters as faceless targets. Carroll Baker, Karl Malden and Edward G. Robinson round out the cast, and James Stewart turns up as a near-comic Wyatt Earp in one long detour. It runs slow and uneven, yet it lands as an honest goodbye to the genre Ford built.
