Synopsis
Christ Stopped at Eboli (Cristo si è fermato a Eboli, 1979) is Francesco Rosi's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Southern Italy, 1935: writer and painter Carlo Levi, an opponent of Mussolini's regime, is exiled to a forgotten village in the Lucania hills.
The locals have a saying — Christ got as far as Eboli and no further; beyond it, neither God nor the government ever bothered to come. Trained as a doctor, Levi starts treating peasants whom Rome regards as barely human. He arrives counting the days until his sentence ends. He leaves changed. Gian Maria Volonté carries it almost wordlessly, all eyes and silence, with Irene Papas and Lea Massari around him.
Adapted from Levi's 1945 memoir, the film looks straight at the "Southern question" Italy preferred to ignore. Rosi shot it slow and near-documentary, running well past three hours, and it first aired as a four-part television cut. This is one that rewards patience over spectacle.
