Synopsis
Woyzeck (1979) is Werner Herzog's spare German drama you can watch online on iFILM, with Klaus Kinski delivering one of his most unsettling performances as a soldier crushed by every rung above him.
Franz Woyzeck earns a few extra marks by volunteering as a lab subject for a local doctor who puts him on an all-pea diet as part of a crackpot experiment. The money goes to his lover Marie and their child. When Marie takes up with the flashy drum major, Woyzeck doesn't explode — he quietly comes apart. Kinski plays the character not as a madman but as a man hollowed out by humiliation, which is far more disturbing.
Based on Georg Büchner's unfinished 19th-century play — left incomplete when the playwright died at 23 — the film strips the story down to its bones. Herzog shot it in a matter of weeks in rural Bavaria, keeping the frame cold and the mood relentless. For anyone who responds to slow-burn character studies where the violence, when it finally arrives, feels inevitable rather than dramatic. Stream Woyzeck (1979) online on iFILM.
