The Ape Woman

The Ape Woman (La donna scimmia, 1964) — watch online on iFILM. Italian director Marco Ferreri's dark comedy stars Ugo Tognazzi as a small-time opportunist and Annie Girardot as the woman whose difference he decides to monetize.

He finds her in a convent kitchen: young, slight, covered head to toe in hair. He marries her, bills her as the Bearded Woman, and calls the arrangement love. Girardot plays Maria without a hint of self-pity, which is what makes the film hard to shake. A Parisian impresario shows up with a better deal and the comedy drops its mask entirely.
