Synopsis
La Grande Bouffe (1973) is a French-Italian black comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Marco Ferreri cast four giants of European cinema — Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli and Philippe Noiret — and handed them one of the most deliberately extreme premises in art-house history.
Four successful, comfortable men drive to a country villa with crates of gourmet food and a shared agreement: they will eat until their bodies give out. No crisis brought them here, no tragedy. Boredom, satiety and a quiet contempt for their own lives. A schoolteacher named Andrea joins them, initially startled, eventually complicit. Ferreri films the consequences without softening anything.
The film screened at Cannes in 1973 and split the room violently — half the critics saw a savage satire of bourgeois excess, the other half walked out. Neither reading is wrong. Five decades on it remains one of those films that refuses to be comfortable, which is exactly the point. Stream La Grande Bouffe (1973) online on iFILM.
