Synopsis
Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) is an American TV horror film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Frank De Felitta built the story around a quiet injustice: Bubba Ritter (Larry Drake), a gentle intellectually disabled man, is blamed for a little girl's injury and hunted down by a four-man vigilante group led by the vindictive postman Harless Hocker (Charles Durning).
Bubba hides in a cornfield dressed as a scarecrow. They shoot him dead. No charges stick. Then the vigilantes start dying — one swallowed by a grain silo, another picked off in a field — and each time a scarecrow stands nearby. Whether the revenge is supernatural or something more grounded is left deliberately ambiguous, which is what gives the film its staying power. Made for CBS television, it punches well above that budget, and Durning's turn as the obsessive, small-town bully is genuinely unnerving. Stream Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) on iFILM.
