Synopsis
Bianco, rosso e Verdone (1981) is an Italian comedy from Carlo Verdone that you can watch online on iFILM. The pretext is tiny: an election is on, and three citizens drive the length of the country to reach their polling stations. Each journey is its own story — and one actor plays all three of them, Verdone himself.
Pasquale is an emigrant from Munich who has missed home so badly he barely notices how the real Italy fails to match the one he cherished from afar. Furio drags his family toward Rome, nagging his wife Magda with an endless stream of instructions until she's pushed to the brink. And young Mimmo keeps stalling his own trip over worry for his ailing grandmother. Verdone made the film under Sergio Leone's production and assembled a gallery of instantly recognizable Italian types — the insufferable know-it-all, the wide-eyed homecomer, the hapless grandson — drawn so precisely the comedy turns into a portrait of a whole nation. The humor is quiet and observational, riding on tone and timing rather than gags. It's one for fans of the Italian comedy of manners, not slapstick.
