Synopsis
"The Quietude" (La quietud, 2018) is an Argentine-French drama-thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Pablo Trapero. The cast: Bérénice Bejo, Martina Gusmán, Graciela Borges, Joaquín Furriel.
Eugenia has not been home in fifteen years. She comes back when her father has a stroke, and the house outside Buenos Aires fills up with the three women he is leaving behind — Eugenia, her mother, and younger sister Mia. They present a united front for about a day. Then the resentments and jealousies start surfacing, and underneath them a secret connected to Argentina's military dictatorship years. The kind families keep because the alternative is worse.
Trapero won the Silver Lion in Venice for "El Clan" (2015), and "The Quietude" belongs to the same tradition — a domestic story that carries political violence inside it without making that the point. The estate is beautiful. The air inside it is not. Stream "The Quietude" (2018) online on iFILM.
