Synopsis
Lilting (2014) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM, the debut feature of director Hong Khaou. When a young man dies suddenly, his English partner tries to reach the one person who matters most to him — a mother who speaks no English at all. Ben Whishaw and Cheng Pei-pei lead.
Kai is gone in an instant. His mother Junn, a widow of Chinese-Cambodian descent, has lived in England for almost thirty years and never learned the language; before he died, Kai moved her into a care home so he could live with Richard. She never knew what the two men were to each other. Now Richard keeps visiting and hires an interpreter, so every sentence between them has to pass through a stranger who hears both the grief and the things left unsaid.
Khaou's first film runs barely ninety minutes and lives almost entirely in pauses, half-finished sentences and meaning lost in translation. Mourning here isn't tears — it's the awkwardness of two people who share nothing but the same dead man. Whishaw plays it quiet and contained, while Cheng Pei-pei holds the whole film with a single look. A small, intimate piece for anyone drawn to slow films about closeness and the wall a language can build. Stream Lilting (2014) online on iFILM.
