The Battered Bastards of Baseball
They put balls back in the game.
Synopsis
The Battered Bastards of Baseball (2014) is a sports documentary you can watch online on iFILM. In 1973, Hollywood character actor Bing Russell did something pro baseball hadn't seen in decades.
He built the country's only independent baseball team: the Portland Mavericks. No big-league farm system, no scouts — just castoffs, bartenders, and anyone who showed up to an open tryout. The establishment sneered. Then the stands filled up, attendance records fell, and the Mavericks became a thorn in organized baseball's side.
Directed by Bing's grandsons, Chapman and Maclain Way, the film runs on home-movie footage and interviews, including memories from his son, actor Kurt Russell, who once played for the team himself. It's the rare sports doc that hooks you even if you don't care about baseball. Stream The Battered Bastards of Baseball online on iFILM.
