Synopsis

After a family tragedy splits the Maynard couple apart — he enters a treatment center, she stays home — Lilly throws herself into gardening. A territorial starling promptly claims the yard and refuses to share. In trying to deal with the bird she ends up talking to a veterinarian (Kline) who used to practice as a therapist. What starts as pest advice becomes something more.
The film is marketed as a comedy but plays mostly as a quiet character study. McCarthy steps well outside her usual register here, and that restraint suits the material.
