The film follows Roger Stone, a man who worked Nixon campaigns as a teenager and bet on a businessman named Donald Trump long before anyone took the idea seriously. Directors Daniel DiMauro, Dylan Bank and Morgan Pehme mostly let him talk, and he does so openly, cynically, clearly relishing his own villain reputation. Paul Manafort, journalists Jane Mayer and Jeffrey Toobin, Tucker Carlson and Trump himself all turn up on screen.
What unsettles is the method: rather than exposing its subject, the film hands him the stage and lets him pose. Stone says out loud the rules he has long played by, and they sound a lot like the playbook of modern American campaigns. A sharp watch for anyone curious where today's election tactics came from.
