Synopsis
The Eight Hundred (2020) is Guan Hu's sweeping war epic, available to watch online on iFILM. Autumn 1937, a burning Shanghai: a small band of Chinese soldiers digs in inside a warehouse, cut off from their army and ringed by Japanese troops.
The true events behind it: fighters of the 524th Regiment, 88th Division — fewer than four hundred men, though legend remembers them as the "Eight Hundred" — held the concrete Sihang depot for four days against a force of twenty thousand. The building had no strategic worth. What mattered was the audience: just across Suzhou Creek lay the lit-up foreign concessions, and the world was watching to see whether a country used to losing would finally hold.
Guan Hu shot the picture entirely on 65mm IMAX cameras — a first for Chinese cinema — and the lens keeps crossing from blood-soaked floors to the neon shop windows on the far bank, a contrast louder than any speech. It runs two and a half hours and pulls no punches. If you can sit through grim, large-scale battle filmmaking in the vein of Dunkirk, this earns its length.
