Synopsis
Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (花木兰, 2009) is a Chinese historical war film you can watch online on iFILM. This is not the Disney telling but a grounded drama drawn from the ancient ballad of a young woman who marches off to war in her father's place. Jingle Ma directs, out of China and Hong Kong.
When the emperor orders one soldier from every household, the Hua family has no son, so the duty falls to an ailing old man. His daughter Mulan (Zhao Wei) binds herself as a man and takes his spot in the ranks. Over twelve years on the frontier against the nomadic Rouran, she climbs from foot soldier to commander, guarding her secret and burying friends along the way. Beside her is Wentai (Chen Kun), the one comrade who knows the truth — and a bond that's deadlier in an army camp than any blade.
Zhao Wei carries the film through cost rather than spectacle: exhaustion, guilt, the slow wearing-down of war. Less fantasy than the cartoon, more mud and hard choices.
