Synopsis
Metro Manila (2013) is a crime thriller worth watching online on iFILM for anyone drawn to hard-edged social cinema. British director Sean Ellis shot the whole film in Tagalog, deep inside the Philippine capital, with a local cast.
Oscar Ramirez abandons the rice terraces of Banaue and brings his wife and kids to Manila chasing something better. The city greets them with scams and slums. A break finally lands when Oscar is hired as a guard for an armored-truck company hauling cash across town. His seasoned partner Ong, played by John Arcilla, takes the rookie under his wing — a little too eagerly. Behind that mentorship sits a scheme, and Oscar has been cast in a part he never agreed to.
Ellis builds the tension brick by brick, until a story about scraping by tips over into a heist with a hidden floor. Jake Macapagal anchors the whole thing on quiet, almost wordless restraint. The film took the Audience Award at Sundance and became Britain's submission for the foreign-language Oscar. Cold, smart, and uncompromising. Stream Metro Manila (2013) online on iFILM.
