Synopsis
Khrustalyov, My Car! (1999) is a film by Alexei German Sr. you can watch online on iFILM, nearly a decade in the making before its world premiere at Cannes. Yuri Tsurylo and Nina Ruslanova lead a cast of dozens shot in near-documentary style.
Moscow, winter 1953. The state security apparatus has started pulling in Jewish doctors under a fabricated conspiracy charge. Military doctor General Klenski moves through his usual routines — courtyards, corridors, official noise — until a single night collapses everything. German's camera stays at crowd level: overcoats pressing together, voices cutting each other off, the texture of a city that has learned to look sideways. At 147 minutes, it is dense, deliberately disorienting, and constructed more like a nightmare than a narrative.
