Synopsis
Public Speaking (2011) is the documentary portrait you can watch online on iFILM. Martin Scorsese directs, and the subject is writer Fran Lebowitz — New York's sharpest commentator on city life, a woman whose chief weapon is the right sentence delivered at the perfect moment.
The camera settles her at a table in Greenwich Village's Waverly Inn and lets her talk. Lebowitz holds forth on everything: tourism and talent, James Baldwin and Andy Warhol, why silence beats chatter most of the time. Scorsese laces in archival footage — Truman Capote, Dorothy Parker, the vanished New York she still measures the present against.
Eighty-two minutes of a live wit with no plot and no grandstanding. It's for viewers who'd rather spend an evening with brilliant company than chase a storyline, and who can listen to one person for as long as she can hold the room. Stream Public Speaking (2011) online on iFILM.
