Synopsis
The Outsider (L'Outsider, 2016) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Christophe Barratier and starring Arthur Dupont as Jérôme Kerviel. Kerviel started at Société Générale in the back office — reconciling trades, learning the plumbing of a major bank — and worked his way onto a trading desk where he quietly built positions that eventually reached tens of billions of euros, all of it hidden from his supervisors.
In January 2008, the bank discovered what he had been doing and unwound the positions at a loss of roughly five billion euros. Kerviel's account: management knew, or chose not to look. The bank's account: a rogue trader acted alone. Barratier lays out both versions across the arc of Kerviel's rise, not as a debate but as a portrait — of ambition, of institutional blindness, and of what happens when one person becomes the available explanation for a system's failure. François-Xavier Demaison and Sabrina Ouazani round out the cast.
This is the kind of financial thriller that trusts the viewer to follow the mechanics without spoon-feeding them. Stream The Outsider (2016) online on iFILM.
