Synopsis
Neruda (2016) is a Chilean drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Pablo Larraín built the film around a strange central conceit: what if the country's most famous fugitive was also writing the story of his own pursuit? Luis Gnecco plays Pablo Neruda, communist senator and Nobel-bound poet; Gael García Bernal plays the inspector sent to catch him.
The year is 1948. Neruda has accused Chile's president of betraying the Communist Party, lost his parliamentary immunity, and gone underground with his wife, painter Delia del Carril. Inspector Óscar Peluchonneau tracks him across safehouses and mountain passes — but Neruda keeps leaving books and notes behind, like a man who wants to be chased more than caught. The detective suspects he's hunting a myth rather than a man.
Larraín had already dismantled the biopic form with Jackie the same year; here he does it earlier and more mischievously. The film was Chile's submission for the Academy Awards and landed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Stream Neruda online on iFILM.
