Synopsis
True Stories (1986) is a musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. It's the only feature directed by David Byrne of Talking Heads, who also narrates from behind the wheel of a convertible, cowboy hat and all.
The setting is Virgil, a made-up Texas town gearing up for its sesquicentennial — 150 years — with a parade and a talent show as the big finish. Byrne skips conventional plot for a procession of oddballs. John Goodman is the sweet-natured local shopping for a wife on television; Swoosie Kurtz, Spalding Gray and Annie McEnroe drift through the margins. Talking Heads wrote the songs, several of which later landed on the True Stories album.
Less a joke machine than a deadpan field study of 1980s small-town America — tender, strange and quietly funny all at once. It plays best for Talking Heads fans and anyone who likes movies that shrug off genre. Stream True Stories (1986) online on iFILM.
