Synopsis
John Mulaney: Baby J (2023) is a stand-up special you can watch online on iFILM. Filmed at Boston's Symphony Hall, it picks up after the worst stretch of the comedian's life — an intervention, rehab, a divorce — and turns the wreckage into an hour of jokes.
Mulaney doesn't let himself off easy. He walks through the Zoom intervention his friends tricked him into attending, then lays out exactly what his addiction drove him to do, and the bit about scoring drugs cuts deeper than anything in his earlier work. Director Alex Timbers, a Broadway name, gives the eighty minutes a tight, almost staged rhythm.
