Synopsis

Shirly-Myrly (1995) — watch online on iFILM — is an outrageous Russian farce from Vladimir Menshov, the Oscar-winning director of Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. Valery Garkalin plays three long-lost brothers simultaneously: a Romani baron, a celebrated Jewish musician, and a seasoned con man, each raised in a different world, none of them aware the others exist.

The con man kicks everything into motion by stealing the Savior of Russia — a diamond unearthed in Siberia and large enough, by the film's own logic, to fund the entire country's vacation for three years. The heist triggers escalating absurdities: the mob, gypsies, bewildered officials, and half the country chase the stone across the film's sprawling two-hour runtime. The ensemble is stacked — Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Inna Churikova, Nonna Mordyukova, Rolan Bykov, Oleg Yefremov, and Oleg Tabakov, all sharing the same chaotic canvas.

Menshov stretched a simple premise into a portrait of 1990s Russia at its most unhinged — a country where the rules had vanished and everyone was improvising. Stream Shirly-Myrly (1995) online on iFILM.
