Synopsis
Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1967) is a Soviet comedy classic you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Leonid Gaidai and starring Alexander Demyanenko, Natalia Varley, and the beloved comic trio of Yuri Nikulin, Georgi Vitsin and Yevgeny Morgunov. Student Shurik travels to a Caucasian republic to collect folk songs and runs straight into Nina — bright, athletic, independent, and utterly out of his league.
A local party official named Saakhov wants Nina for a wife and isn't planning to ask. He hires three bumbling crooks to grab her, which they do — literally, in a sack. Shurik takes his time connecting the dots, but once he does, he acts. The comedy comes from the gap between Soviet idealism and old-fashioned villainy, with Nikulin's trio stealing every scene they're in.
Released in 1967, the film drew 76 million viewers in its first year of Soviet distribution — a number that still stands as a marker of how completely it landed. Gaidai's timing is surgical: the gags build on each other without a wasted beat, and the one-liners have been quoted in Russian speech ever since.
